My thanks go to Ken,for the article.
and Mike for the photo's
BTW like me you may have thought mike had moisture on his lense, but No he tells me that it is reflection of the fog particles from the flash Oh well better luck next time.
For a change most of the crew gathered in the fog, turned left to the golf
links, and assembled at the grid at the bottom of the repeater station
access road.
There were a variety of bikes, and tyres, from slicks to down hill monsters.
To go down first we had to go UP and there was some mumbling from Mumbles,
some walking from those who live on the flat, and a few riding up into the
fog on the main climb. Dobbo turned up on a road bike, which he foolishly
swapped for the Hybrid, as it proved to be very unstable under 30 km/hr, and
having Nigel in the way!!
The rain on Friday made the clay sections slippery and sticky, surprisingly
not clogging the slick tyres as much as the luggy ones, so not a lot of
difference in grip. Mike, who had struggled up the hill on his 100kg monster
bike was getting his moneys worth with the rocks and mud on the down hill
bits. The clip in mountain shoes were good and bad, but road shoes are a
little harder to unclip so Dobbo spent some time laying around on the track.
The descent on the East side was a sandy track and grass, which was
enjoyable for all, with a barbed wire fence to check the concentration near
the end of the bush bit. The ride back into town was a bit messy with the
lug tyres throwing the excess mud in all directions. We were also very lucky
as a 4wd driver was kind enough to let us know there was fog about, which he
could see at 100 km/hr on the South Arm road.
If you enjoyed the ride then Col and Ross are taking credit for the
idea, if not it was Ross's idea, who enjoyed it anyway. The rest of the
Townies were Phill, Robin, Nigel and Ken. The big island was represented by
Doug, Dobbo and Trevor mounted on his old monster ,leaving the KMart special at home . Harwood guests were Peter and Mike who donšt get much hill
climbing practice obviously! Brian came in from the suburbs and hardly
raised a sweat.
An enjoyable ride, followed by a great breakfast for most. Its only a week
till the Broom/Wooli road and return ride so the dirt practice was good.
